How you handle questions from an audience can often be the deciding factor on how your presentation is received. If you’re pitching for business, then it’s absolutely vital to handle questions well.
1. Be prepared for questions – once you write your presentation, believe what you’re likely to be asked and what your answer goes to be. Maybe you won’t want to answer a specific question there then , so believe what you’ll tell satisfy the questioner.
2. Make it clear at the beginning – you’ll plan to take questions as you go or at the top of your presentation. Whatever you opt , make it clear at the beginning and don’t change your mind. i might suggest questions at the top during a short presentation; if you’re taking questions as you go, then your timing will get knocked out. And always remember, an audience won’t forgive you for taking half an hour once you were only scheduled to talk for fifteen minutes.
3. Never finish with questions – much better to invite questions five or ten minutes before the top , affect the questions then summarise for a robust finish. Too many presentations finish on questions and therefore the whole goes a touch flat – particularly if you don’t get any. Imitation
4. Listen – When asked an issue , listen and appearance like your listening. it’s going to be something you’ve heard 1,000,000 times before. Treat the questioner with respect and don’t trivialise their point.
5. Thank the questioner – It’s only polite, it shows respect and it gives you a touch longer to think about your answer.
6. Repeat the essence of the question – Some people might not have heard the question so your answer might not make any sense to them. It also can be irritating for them to not hear the question. 7. Answer to everyone – Don’t fall under the trap of only answering the questioner. If they happen to be near the front then you’ll find yourself having a conversation with them and exclude everyone else.
8. Keep it simple – Many speakers, when it involves questions, became more relaxed and therefore the incontrovertible fact that someone is interested enough to ask them an issue , leads them to travel on too long with the solution – DON’T.
9. Don’t bluff or bluster – If you don’t know the solution to an issue , say so and determine . Suggest to the questioner that you’ll ‘phone them or come and see them with the solution . It can even be an honest thanks to make further contact after the presentation.
As we all know, it’s possible that you simply might not be asked any questions and you then have that awkward silence. People could also be brooding about what you’ve just said and should need longer to ask. they’ll even be a touch shy and should take a couple of minutes to talk out. Why not have an issue of your own prepared and say something like. “You could also be asking yourself………?” If you continue to fail to urge any questions then go straight into your summary and shutting statement.
